TREE PRUNING/CROWN REDUCTION
The pruning of mature trees is generally referred to as Crown Reduction.
This process aims to reduce and manage the overall size, height and spread of the trees canopy. This process when carried out correctly will manage the tree in its landscape and allow more light and space for surrounding gardens, buildings and other structures.
Correct target pruning should allow the tree to continue growing with a natural habit, while not causing unnecessary decay or reactive growth within the canopy.
All of our pruning conforms to British Standard for Tree Work (BS3998)
This is particularly important when working with protected trees covered by Tree Preservation Orders and Conservation Areas.
TREE FELLING
The traditional and highly skilled practice of cutting down trees whole, using a range of precision cuts & wedges at the base of the stem. This is the safest and most efficient way to cut down trees where the site has space to carry out this traditional forestry operation.
TREE REMOVAL
Unfortunately like all living things, trees have a natural life span and do not last forever.
Trees may need to be removed due to a number of reasons;
Becoming dangerous or unstable.
Premature decline due to disease.
Becoming too large or not suitable for the landscape.
To make way for fresh planting and re landscaping.
Causing damage to surrounding buildings.
Trees can be large structures and often growing in awkward or difficult to access sites.
Our team use a wide range of Climbing techniques, Rigging Systems and the latest Machinery to carry out tree removals in the safest and most efficient way possible for each site.
STUMP GRINDING
Tree stumps left over following the removal of a tree, can be awkward and prevent a client from re-landscaping or developing the site.
We have a range of Stump Grinding machines that can safely and efficiently remove the stump by grinding it up with the surrounding earth and converting it back into a compostable mulch. This then allows the area to be turfed over, or for the planting of a replacement tree.
We can remove a small single stump in confined garden, right through to the removal of hundreds of stumps following a large site clearance or forestry felling operation.
CABLE BRACING
Cable bracing is the introduction of support systems into the trees structure.
Some mature trees can be healthy but still suffer with structural defects or failure risk points.The introduction of cable bracing can minimise the risk of failure and allow these trees to be retained long term.
For many years, systems comprising of steel cable and drilled fixings through the trees limbs were used. There are some situation where this is still necessary, however we generally use the modern (non invasive) systems such as (Cobra and Boa)
These systems do not cause any harm to the tree and can be removed or adjusted at any point in the future.
HEDGE CUTTING
Many people look after their own hedges in a small domestic garden.
Where hedges have become very large, or the clients have mobility / age related issues, we can arrange annual trimming and or height reductions to bring the hedge back to a manageable size.
We also carry out trimming maintenance on large areas of hedges for commercial clients and estates.
Hedge cutting must be carried out at the correct time of the year so as not to damage the hedge or disturb nesting birds.

FRUIT TREE PRUNING
Fruit tree pruning is very important if you wish to get a yield of good quality and health fruit from your single tree or established orchard.
We have two members of staff who are highly experienced in the formative pruning and management of fruit trees.
We can discuss the clients requirements for their fruit trees and come up with a long term care strategy that will hopefully lead to years of valuable fruit production.
HABITAT CREATION & MANAGEMENT
At Ancient Oaks, our focus has always been on protecting nature and preserving the natural environment.
Veteran Tree Management is one of our most important tasks. Where possible we will work with clients to preserve ancient and declining trees within the landscape where they can continue to serve as a hugely valuable resource for many creatures and organisms.
Hollow trees and standing monoliths are used by Bats, Birds of Prey and a plethora of Invertebrates & Fungi. We use coronet cuts and other advanced processes to speed up decay and fissuring on declining trees and monolith stems to create habitat for creatures in the surrounding area.
PLANTING
Probably the most rewarding part of our industry is the planting and establishment of new trees that will continue to grow and be enjoyed by future generations.
We can advise clients on the species and cultivar of tree or trees, that will be most suitable to enhance their landscape.
